About Me
My name is David MacPhee. I am a Clinical Social Worker registered with both the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers and the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (for virtual therapy services only).
Education
I received my Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Manitoba in 2017 and completed my Master of Social Work at Dalhousie University in 2019. I became a Registered Social Worker in 2021 and was approved as a Clinical Specialist in 2024.
Training
During my studies at Dalhousie University, I received training in Narrative Therapy. In 2020–2021, I completed training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for Anxiety and Depression, including both individual and group service delivery. In 2022, I received training in the Integrative Trauma and Attachment Treatment Model (Level I). In 2023, I completed training in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Skills, and in 2026, I completed training in Focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (FACT).
My Approach
As my background in Narrative Therapy suggests, I work with clients by exploring and understanding their stories. Seeking therapy takes courage, and every client arrives with unique experiences, perspectives, and strengths. Many people carry stories that support their well-being alongside others that may be holding them back from living the life they want.
I am a trauma-informed clinician, and much of my training has focused on supporting individuals experiencing anxiety and depression. In addition to Narrative Therapy, I have training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (FACT), and the Integrative Trauma and Attachment Treatment Model (ITATM).
The Integrative Trauma and Attachment Treatment Model is a therapeutic approach designed to help people process difficult experiences and unresolved memories—those events that may be described as bad, sad, or scary. This modality can help individuals better understand the impact of past experiences and work toward healing and growth.
My role is to help clients examine their stories, identify patterns that no longer serve them, and develop new narratives that align with their values, goals, and sense of wellness. Because of my diverse education and training, I take a flexible and collaborative approach, allowing each client to guide the process based on what feels most helpful and meaningful for them.
My practice primarily serves adolescents, adults, and older adults, and my caseload typically consists of individuals from their teenage years onward. I strive to create a space where clients feel heard, respected, and supported throughout their therapeutic journey.
I am committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and affirming environment for everyone and consider myself someone who can offer safety, presence, and support to members of equity-deserving communities. Building a strong therapeutic relationship based on trust, respect, and collaboration is central to my work.
I believe that much of the growth and change that occurs in therapy happens between sessions. For this reason, I often introduce reflective exercises and practical strategies that clients can use in their everyday lives. These tools help reinforce new perspectives, build healthy patterns, and support the ongoing development of stories that foster resilience, healing, and well-being.
